What should I expect during my first dental visit?

How often should I see the dentist?

We recommend that children, teens, and adults should all see the dentist for a dental exam and a regular checkup at least once every six months. Patients who are at a greater risk for oral cancer or gum disease may be required to see the dentist more than just twice a year. Why is visiting the dentist so important?

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease is used to describe various diseases that affect the gums, bone and surrounding structures of teeth. The most common types of adult periodontal disease are gingivitis and peridontitis. Gingivitis causes bleeding and reddening of gums. Peridontitis damages the bone and connective tissue that support the teeth. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to tooth loss. Risk factors for periodontal disease include: poor oral hygiene, poor nutrition, smoking, chewing tobacco and diabetes. The existence of bone destruction under the gums cannot be visually detected. Getting rid of Bad Breath

Halitosis, commonly known as bad breath, is an unpleasant and embarrassing condition but everyone has it from time to time. What Causes Tooth Decay?

Are amalgam (silver) fillings safe?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), up to 76% of dentists use silver containing mercury to fill teeth. The ADA also states that silver fillings are safe and that studies have failed to find any link between silver containing mercury and any medical disorder.

If I have braces, do I still need dental checkups every six months?

Yes! You will still need to visit your general dentist every six months for your regular check-up and professional clean. With braces, food may be caught in places that your toothbrush can’t reach. This causes bacteria to build up and can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. This is vitally important as orthodontic treatment can make your teeth more difficult to clean. At what age should I start taking my child to see the dentist?

Legacy Dental recommends seeing your child around their 1st birthday. We allow parents to come with their child. The purpose of the first visit is to familiarize the child with the dental setting, a general oral check and a cleaning. After the first visit, be sure and schedule regular checkups every six months!
